Oops! Protect Your RV Upholstery from Summer Spills

Posted by Claire on May 18, 2012

"If you RV with children, "Oops!" is a word you're going to hear more than a few times this summer. As the RV season gets underway, a little preventative maintenance before you start traveling will minimize damage to RV upholstery and carpeting from unexpected summer mishaps.

Prevention is worth a pound of cure. Depending on the composition of your RV upholstery, pick up a leather or vinyl cleaning kit at your local auto parts store or RV service center. Cleaning leather and vinyl is a two-step process. First, you apply a cleaner to remove the dirt, dust and oils that gradually weaken surfaces, causing them to break down and eventually crack. After cleaning, a protective coating is worked into the surface to help prevent damage and color fading. Annual cleaning of leather and vinyl surfaces is recommended.

Fabric and carpeted surfaces in RVs are usually treated with Scotch-guard or similar protective substances at the factory, but this protection doesn't last forever. After a couple of years (and if you purchase a used RV), you'll want to renew fabric and carpet protection. Scotch-guard and similar products are available in aerosol cans at auto parts stores, RV service centers and discount stores. When spraying, cover nearby surfaces with newspaper to protect them. Annual renewal is recommended."

Quirky Roadside Attractions Add Fun to RV Vacation

Posted by Claire on May 14, 2012

"When you were a kid, roadside attractions were a highlight of family vacations. Highway signs announcing the House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin or the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota or the Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida made you eager to see the promised wonders --and they never disappointed!

Florida offers a wealth of these wacky reminders of yesteryear and a golden opportunity to show your children the quirky wonders of the road less traveled. During your next RV trip to Disney World pull your motorhome off the freeway and explore a few of Florida's old-time attractions.

  • Orange World (near highway 192, Kissimmee) is a great place to stop for a snack. The "Largest Orange in the World" is surrounded by fruit stands where you can buy fresh-picked oranges, grapefruit, bananas and berries.
  • Weeki Wachee Springs State Park (intersection of SR 50 and Highway 19, Spring Hill) is the home of the famous Weeki Wachee mermaids. A water park, canoe rentals and ranger tours make this a nice place to cool off on a hot day.
  • The Water Ski Hall of Fame and Museum in Polk City is in the heart of Florida's water ski district where 554 lakes offer plenty of opportunities to try the sport or watch skiers performing amazing tricks.
